The IGU Urban Commission Conference is the annual meeting of urban geographers from across the globe. The conference has an established reputation and in recent years has grown in scale, with geographers now participating from all parts of the world. In August 2015, the UCD School of Geography hosted the conference and welcomed delegates, representing 21 countries from 5 continents, to Dublin for a week-long event. Over the course of the conference, 72 papers were given and presenters ranged from early-career PhD students to well-established and distinguished researchers. We welcomed Prof Rob Kitchin (Maynooth University), one of the foremost human geographers and currently an ERC Advanced Investigator leading “The Programmable City” project, to give the keynote lectures on Smart Cities, one of the emerging urban issues in the 21st century.
To create a legacy of the event, participants were invited to contribute short summaries of their papers to this book of proceedings. The Geographical Society of Ireland are delighted to publish the proceedings as Special Publication 14 and they are available online here [
